Lucille's is a wider menu than most barbecue chains, which cuts both ways for anyone eating around an allergy. There is more to choose from — a 14 oz Angus steak, blackened catfish, jambalaya, a Garden Burger — but there is also a busy fryer, a shellfish-heavy Southern section and complimentary biscuits landing on the table before anyone has asked a question. Here is how to navigate it.

Start with the biscuits
Every table-service meal opens with made-from-scratch biscuits and apple butter, brought automatically. If you have a wheat or dairy allergy, say so when you sit down rather than when they arrive — the basket comes fast, and a shared table makes crumb contact hard to control. This is the single most common allergen surprise at Lucille's precisely because it is free and unrequested.
Gluten
The smoked meats are the safe ground. Ribs, brisket, tri tip and the half chicken are dry-rubbed and smoked, and the sauce comes to the table separately, so you can see exactly what goes on. What to avoid:
- The entire fried list. Southern Fried Okra ($7.49), Fried Green Tomatoes ($8.49), Southern Fried Dill Pickles ($6.99), Lucille's Onion Straws ($9.49), Deep Fried Shrimp ($11.99), Southern Chicken Strips ($10.99) and the Southern Fried Chicken ($18.99) all share a breading and a fryer.
- Sandwiches and burgers — everything from the $10.99 Hot Link to the $16.99 sirloin steak sandwich arrives on a bun.
- Pasta dishes — Smoked Chicken Pasta ($14.99) and Louisiana Pasta ($19.99).
- Rubs and sauces. Ask. Barbecue rubs and sauces are a routine hiding place for wheat-derived ingredients, and Lucille's does not publish an allergen matrix you can check from your phone.
The workable gluten-light order is a smoked meat plate with a sauce you have asked about — 7 oz brisket at $18.99, 10 oz tri tip at $23.99 or the $18.99 half chicken. The sauce breakdown explains which styles are thin and vinegar-based rather than thickened.
Dairy
Dairy is concentrated in three places: the biscuits, the shareable dips — Spinach & Cheese Dip ($10.49) and Pulled Pork Queso Dip ($9.99) — and the dessert list, where every item from the $4.99 banana pudding to the $5.99 bread pudding, carrot cake and Snickers ice cream pie is dairy-based. Salads carry cheese and creamy dressings as standard; order dressing on the side. The smoked meats themselves are the cleanest part of the menu here.
Shellfish and fish
This is where Lucille's differs most from a standard smokehouse, and where a shellfish allergy needs real care. Shrimp appears across the menu:
Jambalaya Me-Oh-My-A ($20.99) is a Louisiana dish and should be assumed to contain shellfish unless the kitchen says otherwise. Finned fish shows up in Pops' Pan Blackened Catfish ($21.99), the Grilled or Smoked Salmon ($22.99) and the Fresh Salmon Salad ($16.49). Fried shrimp and fried vegetables share fryer oil, so cross-contact in the fried section should be assumed rather than hoped against.
Nuts
Tree nuts and peanuts are not a structural part of this menu — the smoked meats, sandwiches and most Southern specialties are nut-free by construction. The risk sits almost entirely in the dessert case: Homemade Carrot Cake ($5.99) and Snickers Ice Cream Pie ($5.99) are the obvious ones, and pecans are a standard Southern dessert ingredient. Ask before ordering anything sweet.
Vegetarian and low-carb
Better than most barbecue chains on both counts.
- Vegetarian mains: Grilled Portobello Sandwich ($11.99) and Garden Burger ($10.99), plus the fried vegetable appetizers and meat-free salads. More detail on those sits on the sides page.
- Low-carb: the steaks are the play — Certified Angus New York Steak, 14 oz ($29.99), the 8 oz or 12 oz marinated sirloin ($21.99 / $26.99) — along with brisket, tri tip and salmon. Skip the sweet original sauce; the vinegar one carries far less sugar.
A closing caution. Lucille's smokes in house at roughly 25 restaurants and cooks from scratch rather than from a central commissary, which is a strength for flavor and a complication for allergen control: preparation varies. Speak to the manager, not just the server, if the allergy is severe, and confirm current ingredients on the Lucille's menu before you rely on anything written here.
