Where to buy
- In the restaurant. Physical cards at the counter of any of the roughly 90 locations, loaded with whatever amount you name. The simplest route and the one that always works.
- Online at onohawaiianbbq.com. Physical cards by mail and eGift cards delivered by email, which is the practical choice inside a week of the occasion.
- Third-party marketplaces. Resale sites list cards for various chains at a discount. Treat them with caution — balances are not guaranteed by the restaurant.
Availability of each channel can change, so if you need a specific format on a deadline, call the store. The one thing that is consistent is that any card is redeemable at participating restaurants regardless of where it was bought.
What each amount actually buys
The two denominations that land best are $25 and $50. Twenty-five dollars covers a genuine meal for two people with a musubi to share, and fifty dollars covers the $46.99 Family Meal outright, which is the neatest gift on the menu because it feeds a household in one transaction. Fifteen dollars is the awkward one — it buys a plate and a drink and then leaves change that sits on the card.
Checking a balance
Three ways, in order of speed. Ask at the counter of any location, which takes seconds and is the only method that works on a card with a damaged strip. Check through the balance page on the chain website using the card number and PIN. Or, if the card is loaded into the app, the balance appears alongside your rewards points.
Keep the physical card until the balance is genuinely zero. Restaurants can look up a card number, but not usually reconstruct a card you have thrown away.
Expiry, fees and the fine print
Under United States federal law, gift card funds cannot expire for at least five years from the date of purchase, and most restaurant chains simply do not expire them at all. Ono Hawaiian BBQ cards do not carry monthly maintenance fees. California, home to the large majority of the chain, also has one of the strongest cash-back rules in the country: a balance under ten dollars can generally be redeemed for cash. That is worth knowing when a card is down to its last few dollars.
Cards are for food, not discounts — they do not stack with the military discount policy, they are a payment method rather than a promotion, and they can be used alongside whatever specials are running without conflict.

For employee appreciation, client thank-yous or team lunches, buying a stack of cards is usually simpler than arranging catering. The useful per-head figure is $15 for one plate and a drink or $25 for a plate with an add-on. For a twenty-person team, that is $300 to $500 in cards against a comparable catering order from the Ono Hawaiian BBQ menu — with the advantage that everyone picks their own plate and nobody has to guess who wants kalbi.
