Barbecue is an easier cuisine than most to navigate with an allergy, because the center of the plate is meat, rub and smoke. At Sonny's BBQ the complications sit in the buns, the fried appetizers and a handful of the $3.49 Sidekicks — and being a table-service restaurant, you can actually ask a server rather than shouting at a counter.
Gluten
The smoked meats are the safe part of the menu. Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, turkey and chicken are rubbed and smoked, and both rib preparations — Sweet & Smokey and House Dry-Rubbed — are built on rub rather than a flour-thickened marinade.
| Item | Contains gluten? |
|---|---|
| Plated smoked meats — ribs, pork, brisket, turkey, chicken | No |
| Any sandwich bun | Yes |
| Corn Bread ($1.99) and Garlic Bread | Yes |
| Homestyle Mac & Cheese | Yes — wheat pasta |
| BBQ Pork Egg Rolls ($9.99) | Yes — wheat wrapper |
| Fried Okra and Corn Nuggets ($6.29) | Yes — breaded and fried |
| Crinkle Cut Fries, Tater Tots, Loaded Tots | Shared fryer risk |
| Green Beans, Coleslaw, Potato Salad, Baked Sweet Potato | No |
To order gluten-free: take any plate rather than a sandwich. A St. Louis Ribs plate at $17.99 with Green Beans and Baked Sweet Potato is a full meal with no wheat in it. The critical instruction is to ask for it plated, and to avoid the fryer items entirely — the tots and fries share oil with breaded okra and corn nuggets.
Dairy
Dairy is concentrated in a short list, which makes it easy to avoid: Homestyle Mac & Cheese, Loaded Tots ($9.49), the Smoked Buffalo Chicken Dip ($55.99) and Pimento Cheese & Hotlink ($55.99) platters, Homestyle Banana Pudding ($4.99) and any sandwich with cheese, including the Sonny's Cuban ($10.49) and the Steakburger ($10.99). The smoked meats, BBQ Beans, Green Beans and Coleslaw are the clear ground.
Nuts and shellfish
Neither is a headline ingredient anywhere on this menu. There is no shellfish item at all, and no nut-based dish — the desserts are a Cinnamon Sugar Donut ($4.99), banana pudding, Chocolate Chip Cookies ($2.99) and a table-sized Peach Cobbler ($27.99). As always with shared kitchens and bought-in baked goods, confirm rather than assume, and treat the rotating seasonal items with more caution than the core menu — those are the dishes least likely to have settled ingredient information behind them.
Keto and low-carb
Sonny's is unusually good for this, because the Pitmaster Picks let you buy meat without a plate built around starch. A Pick 3 Combo at $17.99 with Green Beans and a Side Salad ($3.99) is close to an ideal low-carb restaurant meal. Avoid the beans and the sweet sauces — reach for the Mustard sauce instead, which carries far less sugar than Sweet or Original.
Vegetarians
Be realistic: this is a smokehouse. What exists is the Side Salad ($3.99), the Smokin' Caesar ($8.99) ordered without the $4.00 meat add-on, Homestyle Mac & Cheese, Crinkle Cut Fries, Fried Okra, Corn Nuggets and Kids Mac and Cheese ($5.99). Ask about the BBQ Beans and Green Beans specifically — Southern versions of both are frequently cooked with pork, and Sonny's names its version Original Recipe BBQ Beans without publishing what is in it.
Practical advice
- Order plated, not as a sandwich, for anything gluten-related.
- Skip everything fried if cross-contact matters — one shared fryer covers okra, nuggets, tots and fries.
- Use the server. Table service is the real advantage Sonny's has here over the counter chains.
- Check the calorie context in the Sonny's nutrition guide and current prices on the Sonny's BBQ menu.
