The calorie range at Sonny's BBQ is wider than at almost any counter-service barbecue chain, because the menu is wider. A Smoked Turkey plate with no sides lands near 420 calories. A Pick 4 Combo, also before sides, is around 1,400. That is a thousand-calorie gap inside the same restaurant, decided entirely by what you say to the server.
Three decisions do all the work
- Which meat, and how many. Going from one meat to four costs $5.00 and roughly 1,000 calories.
- Whether you take the Big Deal. The $4.00 upgrade adds two sides and a drink — typically 400 to 700 calories.
- Which of the $3.49 Sidekicks you pick. Every side costs the same, so this one is free to get right.
Plates and combos
| Order | Approx. calories |
|---|---|
| Smoked Turkey plate, no sides | ~420 |
| St. Louis Ribs plate, no sides | ~1,050 |
| Pick 4 Combo, no sides | ~1,400 |
Smoked turkey is the leanest thing Sonny's smokes and, at $15.49, it is priced the same as the Half Chicken and the Pulled Chicken. If you are watching the number, that is the plate. Ribs are the opposite: the St. Louis rack at $17.99 is the best-value rib order in American chain barbecue and also one of the heaviest single items you can put in front of yourself, with no lighter version available.
The Pick 4 Combo deserves a specific warning. At $19.99 it is the standout value order on the menu, and the reason is that it is four meat portions. Ordering it because it is cheap and then finishing it is how a barbecue dinner becomes a 2,000-calorie evening. Order the Pick 2 at $15.99 if you actually intend to eat all of it.
Sandwiches
| Sandwich | Approx. calories |
|---|---|
| Pork Sandwich, sandwich only | ~600 |
| Beef Brisket Sandwich, sandwich only | ~690 |
The sandwich board is the flattest part of the menu — the spread between the cheapest sandwich and the most expensive is under a hundred calories, so pick on taste. The Smoked Turkey Sandwich at $9.79 is the leanest of them, and the Sweet Carolina at $9.99 arrives with slaw already on it, which is the only sandwich where a side is built in.
The Sidekicks are where the swing is
| Side | Approx. calories |
|---|---|
| Green Beans | ~80 |
| Original Recipe BBQ Beans | ~250 |
| Homestyle Mac & Cheese | ~330 |
Two orders of Homestyle Mac & Cheese is 660 calories. Two orders of Green Beans is 160. Same $6.98, same Big Deal, 500-calorie difference — and since every Sidekick is flat-priced at $3.49, nobody is paying a premium to eat lighter. The full ranking is in the Sonny's sides guide.
The lightest complete meal
Smoked Turkey plate ($15.49), Green Beans, a Side Salad ($3.99) and Unsweet Tea gets you a full table-service dinner at roughly 550 calories. Swap the tea for Sweet Tea and you add most of a side back. The Side Salad is the only genuinely low-calorie item Sonny's sells that is not a vegetable side, and the $4.00 meat add-on turns the BBQ Salad ($9.49) or Smokin' Caesar ($8.99) into a main without the bun.
How accurate these numbers are
Treat all of this as planning guidance. Sonny's plates are assembled by kitchen staff rather than weighed at a counter, so portion consistency varies more between franchises than it does at the counter chains, and the seasonal menu rotates constantly. If you are managing a medical diet, check the official figures and read the Sonny's allergen guide alongside this page. Everything with current pricing sits on the Sonny's BBQ menu.
