The spread between the lightest and heaviest order at Buddy's Bar-B-Q is roughly 900 calories — a regular pork sandwich lands near 480, the Sampler Dinner near 1,400. Because the menu is short, there are only about four decisions that move the number at all, and one of them is an item most people do not even think of as food they ordered.
The short version
Three things drive the total on a Buddy's tray, in this order:
- Whether you order hushpuppies. Ten pieces is around 560 calories — more than the pork sandwich they sit next to.
- Sandwich versus dinner. A Pork Dinner is roughly 820 calories against about 480 for the sandwich, for the same meat.
- Whether ribs are involved. The Smoky Wet Rib Dinner is near 1,150, and there is no half-portion version of it.
The pork-versus-beef question, which is what people usually ask first, barely registers. A Beef Brisket Sandwich is about 560 against 480 for pork — an 80-calorie gap, small next to a side of hushpuppies.
Sandwiches, baskets and the Hawg Back
The Pork Sandwich (Regular), from $5.49, is the lightest real meal on the menu at roughly 480 calories, and it happens to be the cheapest barbecue sandwich of any chain covered on this site. That is an unusual combination — normally the lean order is the expensive one.
The Hawg Back, Buddy's signature open-faced serving at $8.99 to $9.99 for pork, comes in near 700 calories. It sits exactly where you would expect: more meat than a sandwich, less food than a dinner. If you want the item Buddy's is known for without a dinner-sized number, that is the order.
Baskets add sides to a sandwich for about $3.50, which is good value but is also where the calories arrive. The Pork Sandwich Basket at $8.99 is not a light lunch by the time it reaches the table.
Dinners
| Order | Approx. calories |
|---|---|
| Pork Sandwich (regular) | ~480 |
| Beef Brisket Sandwich | ~560 |
| Hawg Back (pork) | ~700 |
| Pork Dinner | ~820 |
| Beef Brisket Dinner | ~880 |
| Smoky Wet Rib Dinner | ~1,150 |
| Sampler Dinner | ~1,400 |
| Hushpuppies (10 pc) | ~560 |
| Meringue pie (slice) | ~420 |
The Sampler Dinner from $16.99 is still the right first-visit order — it is the only way to try the range in one sitting — but at roughly 1,400 calories it is a whole day's main meal rather than a lunch. Split it between two people and it becomes both cheaper and lighter than ordering two dinners.
The hushpuppy problem
Ten hushpuppies for $3.99 is the best-value item on the menu and the one regulars add to everything. It is also deep-fried cornmeal batter at roughly 560 calories a basket. Nothing about that makes it a bad order; it just is not a side dish in the way slaw is a side dish. Split an order across the table and you get the same experience for 140 calories a head. More on portioning is in the Buddy's sides guide.
Desserts and sweet tea
A slice of meringue pie ($3.49) is around 420 calories, which is modest for a dessert almost nobody else still makes. Hot Fudge Cake ($4.99) is heavier. The quieter number is sweet tea: a gallon at $5.99 is the standard table drink across East Tennessee, and sweet tea carries real sugar — if you are counting anything, count that before you count the pork.
Two orders that work
- Lighter, around 500 calories: Pork Sandwich (from $5.49), unsweetened tea, no hushpuppies.
- Signature, around 700: Hawg Back (from $8.99), a shared order of hushpuppies, unsweetened tea.
A note on accuracy
Buddy's is a fifteen-restaurant regional chain, not a national one, and it does not publish an item-by-item nutrition sheet the way the big chains do. The figures here are estimates built from portion sizes and comparable items, and Buddy's chops its pork by hand, so real variance of 10 to 15 percent is normal. If you are managing a medical diet, ask at the restaurant and read the Buddy's allergen guide as well. Current pricing for every item is on the full Buddy's Bar-B-Q menu.
